A Banana Seat Built for Two

The summer before seventh grade, I traveled with my mom and little sister to visit mom’s cousin, June, and her two kids. They lived in the avenues of Salt Lake City.

We weren’t there long, when I was introduced to a neighbor girl who had a beautiful, new, 1967 stingray bicycle with a banana seat. It was so cool! I was really excited when she offered to let me ride it.

My 9-year-old sister, Joyce, wanted to hitch a ride with me. The neighbor encouraged it and said we could both fit on the banana seat.

So off we went, quickly flying down a very steep hill!

I could barely see around Joyce. She was in front as I was trying to steer. Positioned the way we were on that long, skinny seat, I couldn’t find the breaks to slow us down.

Heaven knows, I didn’t need to pedal at the speed we were going. For that matter, I’m not sure my feet even touched the pedals. We only passed two or three houses before making a crash landing.

Joyce was fine. She was always fine! But me… I had to go to the emergency room and returned to June’s house with a cast, some pain pills and a diagnosis of a crinkled ankle bone. It hurt so bad.

The next year I sprained one or the other ankle, at least three times, a sure sign of instability.

Seventh grade meant a new school, new teachers, different friend dynamics and the uncertainty that goes with becoming a teenager. Everything seemed so unpredictable.

In today’s world, those feelings of uncertainty I felt as a young teen, are magnified—at least tenfold.

Everyone is experiencing some type of instability—whether it has to do with finances, relationships, disasters, political unrest, or numerous other things—it seems to be everywhere.

Yesterday, I listened to an interview where a man was talking about the devastating California fires. He talked about the importance of community, knowing your neighbors, and watching out for each other.

There is something I consider very significant that I would add to his comment, and that is to keep your faith strong.

When you are feeling unstable and life feels unpredictable, it is so important to be surrounded by your faith community, neighbors, friends and family.

They bring love, support, peace, and can help strengthen your faith when you are feeling uncertain. The good news is… you can offer the same things in return when they need it.

Take some precious time to strengthen your faith every day, and build a close community of neighbors, friends and family. Do what you can to make those connections last.

If you are dealing with any instability in your life, my prayers for a better future go out to you and yours. I pray you can feel God’s love for you, and that you can stand firm, steadfast and immovable as you experience the love and support of your community.

Say the dose of enlightenment below.

With love,

Jeri

Since we promised to treat you to an extra dose of light in your inbox, we include a Dose of Enlightenment for you at the end of each newsletter. We value your agency, so it’s up to you whether or not you receive it!

This Dose of Enlightenment is a frequency equation meant to clear a hidden and trapped emotion that you’ve been holding onto.

If today's emotion is one that we have already cleared, know that we are addressing a different layer or situation this time.

*******************************************************

Today’s emotion is: instability

How does this emotion apply to you? For best results, ponder this question and identify how instability applies to you.

Dose of Enlightenment: 77 + 923 = E

Say it out loud with intent: "seventy-seven plus nine-twenty-three equals enlightenment.”

Breathe. Let it go. Feel the shift. Allow your body to be filled with light.
