Confession: I’m almost 44 years old and I live with my parents. It’s been for longer than I’d often like to admit.

Pathetic, right? Or maybe not…

Maybe it’s all the other cultures in the world who got it right… where family members stick together and/or live in close proximity to each other—often in the same home.

I’ve cycled through a lot of different emotions regarding my living situation—the good and the not so good. Some of you have heard me say that the Lord tricked me into moving home. 

And He totally did! He has His ways of getting you where you need to be. But that’s a story for another day.

I remember one time, I was struggling—feeling like a massive loser—totally judging myself… I just wanted to move back into a place of my own again, but things weren’t working out. As I sat in church and prayed to know what to do, I heard these words clearly in my head:

This isn’t about you. You are where you’re supposed to be.

In that moment, I realized I was being selfish. I hadn’t even thought about the reasons why the Lord brought me home.

As I considered the many health issues my dad has had, and the ways I’ve been able to help around the yard and the house, which eases the burdens on both of my parents… and be close to my sister and her family… and serve in callings at church where I met certain people I wouldn’t have met otherwise…

Even though it’s not about me, the Lord has also made it about me by sending blessing after blessing into my life for being where He is asking me to be right now. 

What if the reason you are feeling pathetic isn’t actually what you think? What if the Lord is trying to teach you something you couldn’t have learned any other way? What if the Lord is using you to bless the lives of others?

You don’t always know the Lord’s reasons or His plans for you, but I do know that you can trust Him. His plans for you are greater than you could ever imagine!

Jeremiah 29:11—For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
