Everything to Everyone

Jeri: One of the beautiful gifts given to women is the ability to nurture. It can become a problem when you start putting everyone else’s needs above your own.

Jac: Agreed. We have all heard the oxygen analogy that you are reminded of every time you fly—in case of a change in the cabin pressure, you must put on your own oxygen mask first, before you help someone else put theirs on.

What good would you be to others passed out from lack of oxygen!?

It’s the same for nurturing… If you want to be prepared to help care for someone else to the best of your abilities, you have to take care of yourself first.

Jeri: This is not how I was raised, and it’s a comment that ruffles a lot of feathers. Many people believe it is selfish to put yourself first. But honestly, in my experience, I’ve learned that it is selfish to not put yourself first!

Jac: It’s true. Culturally, it is almost feels expected to always put other people before yourself—including your own needs. Which never works out for the best.

I’d love to hear more of your thoughts on how it’s actually selfish to NOT put yourself first?

Jeri: When my youngest son was 16 or 17, Charlie and I signed up for the Love and Logic parenting class offered through our school district. The main thing I remember is that “parents who put themselves first, raise more confident children”.

That comment really stuck with me. At first, I was troubled by that statement, but as the teacher explained further, it made so much sense.

As a mom, I was trying to be everything to everyone. It was taking a toll on me and I was failing miserably. I was giving when there was nothing left to give—because that is what I thought was expected of me.

I never took time for myself. I was an angry, unreasonable and resentful mom and I took it out on my children.

I believe that I robbed my family of some wonderful blessings by NOT putting myself first. That was selfish!

Gifting permission to nurture myself allowed me to be a kinder and gentler mom. I was calmer and easier to get along with. There was a great blessing that came from me putting myself first… the whole family was happier and chaos turned to peace.

Jac: That makes sense. I love that you found peace and joy in recognizing the importance of nurturing yourself first. Sadly, some people misinterpret that shift to mean that you no longer take care of others… However, it actually means you can take better care of them because you feel good enough to do it—it’s preparing you for the job—physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

Jeri: Exactly! If you are ready to allow yourself the gift of nurturing you—by putting yourself first—see the dose of enlightenment below.

Since we promised to treat you to an extra dose of light in your inbox, we include a Dose of Enlightenment for you at the end of each newsletter. We value your agency, so it’s up to you whether or not you receive it!

This Dose of Enlightenment is a frequency equation meant to clear a hidden and trapped emotion that you’ve been holding onto.

If today's emotion is one that we have already cleared, know that we are addressing a different layer or situation this time.

*******************************************************

Today’s emotion is: not nurturing self

How does this emotion apply to you? For best results, ponder this question and identify how not nurturing self applies to you.

Dose of Enlightenment: 88 + 912 = E

Say it out loud with intent: “eighty-eight plus nine-twelve equals enlightenment.”

Breathe. Let it go. Feel the shift. Allow your body to be filled with light.
