From Meltdowns to Shut-Downs: Two Sides of Emotional Instability

Suddenly, the guy next to me started screaming at the man sitting in front of him.

“Don’t tell me what to do!! You shut up!! Don’t you dare tell me to be quiet!!”

He’d been muttering throughout the entire Sunday school class (he has mental health issues). By the time I was making my comment, his muttering grew dramatically louder—so much so that someone finally asked him to be quiet so others could hear what I was saying.

I knew he struggled, but I hadn’t realized just how unstable he was until that moment.

When I hear the words emotionally unstable, I often picture situations like that one—freaking out, volatile, unpredictable, and even frightening behavior.

But there’s another kind of emotional instability.

Imbalance can sit on either side of the spectrum: disconnected, unfeeling, or emotionally shut down vs. volatile, unhinged, or falling apart.

I was reminded of this when my Grandma Taylor passed away during a particularly hard semester in my graphic design program.

I remember shedding a few tears at the news… but I had a lot on my plate, and I think I just disconnected from the reality of it all.

At her funeral, all the grandkids were supposed to sing a song. And they tried. But halfway through, they completely fell apart—crying enough tears to fill a lake that might rival Lake Superior.

All of them... except for me.

I hate singing solos, but I was the only one not crying. I had blocked out all my emotions that day, and felt duty-bound to finish the song no matter what.

A few days later, after the semester had ended, I turned in a late project to my professor. She knew about my grandma’s passing and had encouraged me to take extra time to complete it before she finalized grades.

She asked how I was doing. I told her I was fine.

She didn’t believe me.

She gently encouraged me to take time to process my emotions. She warned that if I didn’t, I might end up sobbing in the middle of the grocery store—just like she once had.

The truth is: you can swing from one extreme to the other on the spectrum of emotional instability.

If you’ve been feeling anything on either end of that spectrum, no matter the degree, there’s a dose of enlightenment below for you.

It’s better to clear what’s weighing on you now… before you fall apart like my professor in the store—or disconnect like I did when my grandma died—or flip flop from one end to the other. You’ve got this!

Love from Jac

Since we promised to treat you to an extra dose of light in your inbox, we include a Dose of Enlightenment for you at the end of each newsletter. We value your agency, so it’s up to you whether or not you receive it!

This Dose of Enlightenment is a frequency equation meant to clear a hidden and trapped emotion that you’ve been holding onto.

If today's emotion is one that we have already cleared, know that we are addressing a different layer or situation this time.

*******************************************************

Today’s emotion is: emotionally unstable

How does this emotion apply to you? For best results, ponder this question and identify how emotionally unstable applies to you.

Dose of Enlightenment: 123 + 877= E

Say it out loud with intent: “one-twenty-three plus eight-seventy-seven equals enlightenment.”

Breathe. Let it go. Feel the shift. Allow your body to be filled with light.
