Jac: When everything crashed and burned with Stu (name has been changed), I had decided he was just like all of the other guys… amazing for the first little while, until he thinks he has me secured in a relationship… then he puts me on the back burner until times when it's convenient for him to put forth even a small amount of effort.
I tolerated it, because I understand busy times at work—until I saw him doing the same thing to his daughters. Missing important events due to work, or not being present enough to get them to their important events because he was so focused on work—especially when I realized he was choosing to do extra work.
It served me well to put him in the “guy who isn’t willing to work for a real relationship” category. Then I could just move on and heal from yet another broken heart.
Jeri: That is so sad. Unfortunately, it can happen in marriages too. People get caught up in themselves and neglect each other and break each other’s hearts without really meaning to. Have you heard from Stu since then?
Jac: Yes… a few years later. Apparently, Stu had an accident that caused him to have to move back home. His mom nursed him back to health in the same town where his daughters live which is close to Rigby.
When he was healed, he reached out to me and told me he lived in town now and wanted to go to dinner to catch up.
I had to reevaluate everything I had previously concluded about Stu. During our correspondence, and later when we caught up at dinner, the Lord taught me that Stu is a genuinely good man who has been dealing with trauma and PTSD from previous life experiences.
Stu had wanted to prioritize me. He wanted to prioritize his girls. But work was the only way he knew to calm himself enough to prevent his anxieties and fears from running rampant and destroying his life.
He wanted to be present, but he just couldn’t be there… because of where he was in his healing process.
Jeri: That had to be very eye opening. And it sounds like a good lesson for us all.
Jac: It really was eye opening. While I needed to be right, and I was to a degree… I needed the Lord to teach me that I was also wrong.
That perhaps all of these men out there who jump into relationship after relationship, but can’t commit or prioritize their partners… Well… Maybe they have trauma too. (I say men, because that’s who I date, but I know women do it too.)
Not that it’s a good thing for anyone to avoid their healing process and jump into a relationship that will eventually hurt people… but we need to remember that all of us are coping with trauma. Let’s give each other grace and realize that we are probably doing the best we can with the knowledge we currently have.
Jeri: I agree. Heaven knows that nobody escapes this life unscathed.
If you find yourself needing to be right, it’s time to examine your motivations. How is “being right” serving you? It’s also a good idea to ask the Lord to reveal His Truth regarding the situation. Then see the dose of enlightenment below.

Today’s emotion is: need to be right
How does this emotion apply to you? For best results, ponder this question and identify how need to be right applies to you.
Dose of Enlightenment: 125 + 875 = E
Say it out loud with intent: “one-twenty-five plus eight-seventy-five equals enlightenment.”
Breathe. Let it go. Feel the shift. Allow your body to be filled with light.
