I remember thinking I had forgiven a particular person. Then something else would happen, and I’d feel so upset. So I would do everything I could to forgive again.

And that cycle repeated over the years… getting less frequent as time moved on. But for some reason, even though I thought I’d fully resolved things on my end—Every. Single. Time. … I couldn’t seem to fully resolve the past upsets.

As I’ve prayed and learned more and dug deeper over these past 22 years… I have come to know that the reason why I hadn’t been able to fully clear all of that from the past was actually three-fold.

First, because healing is often very layered. And that’s ok. It’s meant to be that way.

Second, because similar behaviors from other people seemed to compound, stir up, and then reopen old wounds and old frustrations.

And third, I hadn’t yet been willing to give up my scars.

Oddly, I was wearing my disfigurement from old battle wounds as a badge of honor. Because that’s what we do as humans.

I’m sure you’ve heard people try to best each other on who’s had more surgeries, who’s on more medications, who’s been the most ill… Yikes, I’d like to get rid of that false tradition!!

On some level, I thought that because my experiences (including past traumas) have shaped me into who I am (and I love and appreciate who I am), that I had a right to keep my patches and bandages, and to show off my heart’s Kintsugi (cracks repaired with beautiful gold) because of how many times it’s been broken and shattered.

It sounds ridiculous when you say it out loud (or write it all down), doesn’t it!? But I have a feeling you just might be able to relate.

A few weeks ago, while doing a very intentional emotional release session using M: Collaborations with the Divine Doctor, God gave me a new heart—just like He says He will in Ezekiel 36:26.

“A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.”

But here’s the catch. I had to be willing to let go of ALL of my scars, my battle wounds, my Kintsugi, my bandages, my patches… I had to allow Him to take all of that away and give me something completely new. It wasn’t easy, but it was sooooooo worth it.

And in my heart—my beautiful new heart—I know that those past emotional upsets have finally been resolved—that any layers that had been left were stripped away in that moment.

That, my friend, is healing.

It’s time for you to examine your own heart. Perhaps it’s time to let God give you a new one. Are you ready to let go of your scars and fully forgive those who have hurt you on the deepest levels?
