I felt really good about my decision—but I wasn’t looking forward to telling Adam. I knew he wasn’t going to like it.

I’ve always expressed myself better through writing, so I brought a letter to help explain everything. I showed up with the letter (so we could talk through things, if needed) and the intention to give him the ring back.

But Adam didn’t accept my decision. He wouldn’t take the ring. He wouldn’t let me leave. 

He did take the letter—but only to verbally rip it to shreds. He ranted and raved for three hours, blocking the door—my only way out. He finally let me go when I agreed to give it more thought.

I was so confused.

Not about the decision—I still knew ending the engagement was the right thing. That experience had only confirmed it.

What confused me was how he’d managed to trap me there, tear down everything I said, and somehow persuade me to second-guess myself.

The only thing I knew to do next was spend time with God.

God gave me a gentle but clear reprimand for not following through the night before—even though it had felt impossible. I realized I should have called on Him sooner.

Still, I could feel He was with me. I needed to stand firm in the decision He had guided me to make.

When I got back into town, Adam was waiting at the freeway exit. Creepy.

He followed me home. I told him it was over. He protested. I turned, walked into the house, and shut the door.

But he opened it and followed me all the way to my bedroom.

Thankfully, my parents were home (thank you, Heavenly Father, for orchestrating that!). They made it clear he wasn’t welcome—especially not in my room.

I was finally free.

If you’ve been battling inner confusion, there’s a dose of enlightenment below to help bring clarity. And remember… go to God for answers. Follow His counsel the first time. Don’t delay. It only causes more unrest to your soul.

Trust me. I would know ;)

And remember: God will be with you. He will fight your battles.

You only need to trust Him.
