Today marks 48 years of marriage for Charlie and me. That’s a long time. It has been so difficult more often than not, but I’m truly grateful that we are still together. 

Our marriage has survived multiple and serious health issues, 5½ weeks on life support in ICU, chronic depression, Charlie passing out while driving, damaging addictions, the loss of our first baby, raising four children, sending two sons off to war and helping our children through their ups and downs of marriage and divorce.

We’ve grated on each other’s nerves and have survived love, hate, indifference, grief, anger, blame, resentment, fear, guilt, forgiveness, and a roller coaster of other emotions—plus years of living in the same house, but feeling disconnected.

One day while praying intently about what I could do to heal our marriage, I was distinctly told to get my real estate license. It was something that I didn’t want to do, but I got it because I knew that God knew it would help Charlie and I communicate better.

And honestly, I think that God just wanted to see if I was serious about hearing him!

I really never got fully into real estate, although it did help our marriage. I felt guilty when I needed to step away and move forward in teaching and building the Enso business with Jaclyn.

Guilt is complicated. On the one hand, I didn’t want to disappoint God and I didn’t want to hurt Charlie… but I also didn’t want to fail at something I really felt I was called to do.

I offered so many prayers during this time, persistently worked on my marriage, used doses of enlightenment almost every day, and continued to move forward in faith. 

Do know what? Somehow, it all worked out.

I was able to let go of the guilt and trust that God had a plan for me and Charlie. At the time I had no idea what it would look like, but I just kept moving forward.

Today we laugh more, respect more, connect more and understand each other more. We have been through the refiner’s fire and still… we are a work in progress.

If you have been struggling with guilt about the right to move forward, I challenge you to seek counsel from the Lord. He knows what you are dealing with and he knows exactly what you need in your situation. He will lift your guilt if you ask him, and will gently guide you in the direction that will bring you confidence in your decision.
