Hope after Heartbreak

Jac: As everyone knows, Valentine’s Day is coming up, and it can be quite an interesting day… Some people love it, some people hate it, some people fall somewhere in between the two… and some people just don’t care one tiny bit about it.

It seems like it creates a lot of unmet expectations in a lot of ways. And for those nursing a broken heart, it could be a very difficult day. You can’t go anywhere right now, without it being thrown in your face everywhere you turn.

However, I have found that there is always hope after heartbreak.

Jeri: Thank goodness for that hope. That reminds me of my heartbreak story.

From the moment our eyes locked I was smitten. A newly returned missionary, Vince was clean cut, fit and trim. His bright blue eyes , slightly disheveled brown hair and rugged good looks made my heart skip a beat. He loved football and had been the starting quarterback for Ricks College before his mission. He was my first true love and I fell so hard for him.

He was also spoiled, a bit egotistical and manipulative. Because of that, I broke things off… I chose to walk away. But even then I couldn’t get him out of my head. I was so broken hearted.

Jac: Dang. Being the one to break things off doesn’t make it any less painful. Did you ever hear from him again?

Jeri: A few months later he called. He would be driving through my home town and wanted to see me. I was still deeply in love with him and hoped he wanted me back.

Jac: How did that go?

Jeri: When he arrived, we were both nervous. However, his behavior was strange and he didn’t want to get close to me, even though he confessed his love. It seemed like he was talking in circles. I was confused until he told me there was someone else. He couldn’t be with me because he ‘had’ to marry her.

Jac: Ouch. That had to be so hurtful.

Jeri: At the time I didn’t understand the implications of his words.

I was inconsolable and cried almost non-stop for days. My heart was broken and I felt like I would never recover.

My dear father was so concerned about me. He informed me of a vivid dream he had of me and a handsome young man dressed in white wedding attire. We were dancing down the street in front of our house and were very happy.

Dad said the young man looked like Vince, but wasn’t sure if it was him. He assured me that everything would be alright.

His dream gave me a peaceful feeling.

Jac: That’s awesome. What ended up happening after that?

Jeri: A couple of months later I got a job and moved back to Rexburg, where I met my husband Charlie, who is wonderful, kind, loving and generous.

Friends and family claimed he looked a lot like my ex! The crazy thing is… he loves to dance… my ex hated it. You may say Charlie is the man of my dad’s dreams! Haha!

Jac: Haha that’s hilarious, but true!

Jeri: Thankfully, Charlie healed my heart, made me feel whole again, and has blessed my life in so many ways. I can’t imagine being with anyone else—especially through the ups and downs of almost 50 years together!

Jac: Thank you for sharing that beautiful story of hope after heartbreak.

If you are feeling heartbroken—whether it’s from loss of a relationship, loss of a loved one or pet, or for any other reason, please know that—even though it may not feel like it right now—there really is hope and healing.
