When my first daughter was 6 weeks old, I dressed her up in an darling little white sunsuit with pink trim and a matching pink bonnet. She looked adorable and I was excited to show her off at my husband’s family reunion.
When we arrived, it was just a matter of minutes, before my husband left me with his mom and her cousins while he went in search of his cousins.
I wanted to stay with him and felt so anxious and uncomfortable when he walked away. He promised he would only be 5 minutes.
Those 5 minutes seemed like an eternity as those bossy women talked about how my baby shouldn’t be in the sun. I was at a different table and attempted to ignore them as I focused on my precious baby. After all, they didn’t seem to be talking to me—just about me and what I should be doing.
Soon, my mother-in-law decided to take charge. She walked over to me, picked up the baby carrier, and turned it around with my baby in it.
Unbelievable! I couldn’t understand why she would embarrass me like that. I did not feel safe and wanted to cry.
Instead, I decided to take control of the awkward situation, picked up my baby, and went in search of my husband. We were leaving.
This was the day I embraced control in order to protect myself. If I couldn’t trust my husband to be my protector, I would do it myself. Sadly, this belief has been detrimental to our marriage, but gratefully, we have been blessed with the tools to overcome and turn things around.
Psychcentral.com says: “A person with a 'controlling personality' is driven by high levels of anxiety to feel safe. Though the need for control might be an unconscious feeling, the anxiety can create a strong desire to control surroundings and other people to keep a sense of order.”
People who try to control others usually have trust issues and exercise control in a relationship in order to protect themselves. They may also be manipulative, critical, insecure, and might ask too many questions.
If you feel like you are in a position of being overly controlling, I challenge you to identify the root cause.
What happened to cause the anxiety and mistrust that made you feel unsafe in a situation?
When you identify the root, you will find it easier to overcome the need for control.
With love,
Jeri

Dose of Enlightenment: 167 + 833 = E
Say it out loud with intent: “one-sixty-seven plus eight-thirty-three equals enlightenment.”
Breathe. Let it go. Feel the shift. Allow your body to be filled with light.
