How to Speak Up Without Tearing Down

Jac: Relationships can bring so much joy—but they can also be one of the hardest places to navigate our emotions. One thing I’ve been thinking about lately is how we sometimes hold back from speaking our minds. Have you ever struggled with that?

Jeri: Absolutely. Not speaking your mind can go two ways: either giving someone the silent treatment—or having no filter at all and saying way too much.

Jac: That’s so true. Have you had experiences with both extremes?

Jeri: I have been guilty of both and have had to learn how to find balance.

Jac: I’m confident you’re not the only one…

Jeri: When I was first married, I’d get upset with my husband and give him the silent treatment. One night, he told me he’d learned that the silent treatment is actually a form of abuse.

I never gave him the silent treatment again—but instead, I swung to the opposite extreme, expressing myself loudly and angrily. I’m so ashamed of that. Thankfully, I’ve learned we’re all capable of making good and positive changes in our lives.

Jac: God is so good for always giving us opportunities to change for the better.

Jeri: One of my biggest regrets happened in a conversation with someone I dearly love. I fired off a comment I felt was justified—but in reality, it deeply hurt this person.

My intention was never to cause pain, but it did. Even though I felt contrite and apologized profusely, there was no forgiveness. It happened a few years ago, and I can still feel the pain and sorrow it caused. This person continues to carry that hurt.

I know this is a lesson for both of us, and I realize how important my own healing is. I pray that someday this person will be able to forgive me. Until then, ho'oponopono—a Hawaiian healing practice focused on reconciliation and forgiveness—and prayer are my go-to tools.

Jac: That sounds like a difficult lesson to learn. Thank you for sharing your experiences and what has helped you heal. Ho’oponopono and prayer truly are powerful tools.

If you’re struggling to find the right words—or to speak your mind without regret—see the dose of enlightenment below.

Since we promised to treat you to an extra dose of light in your inbox, we include a Dose of Enlightenment for you at the end of each newsletter. We value your agency, so it’s up to you whether or not you receive it!

This Dose of Enlightenment is a frequency equation meant to clear a hidden and trapped emotion that you’ve been holding onto.

If today's emotion is one that we have already cleared, know that we are addressing a different layer or situation this time.

*******************************************************

Today’s emotion is: not speaking your mind

How does this emotion apply to you? For best results, ponder this question and identify how not speaking your mind applies to you.

Dose of Enlightenment: 75 + 925 = E

Say it out loud with intent: “seventy-five plus nine-twenty-five equals enlightenment.”

Breathe. Let it go. Feel the shift. Allow your body to be filled with light.
