My final project for my conceptual design class was late. I’d handed it in on time, thinking it was complete, but my professor felt like it was missing something. I knew she was right, but I didn’t know how to fix it. She gave me a few extra days to get it back to her.
The project was to take two opposite words and marry them with a design. I chose the words: separate and togetherness.
Probably because that’s what my life was like. Even when I was with people, I felt painfully alone.
I’m not an illustrator, but I created a digital illustration to execute the project. I was scared to show it to anyone because my professor had just told us days before how she could see into her students souls through their designs.
And I didn’t want her—or anyone—to know that I was the project—that I embodied separate togetherness.
That semester had been particularly difficult. I had been dealing with a heavy load of core credits, a broken engagement (I’d already been divorced for almost two years), and the loss of my grandmother.
I really didn’t know how I was supposed to feel, or how to even process all of that.
As I pondered how to finish my project, the inspiration hit me hard and fast. I ran to the store for supplies, then I cut that illustration up into a grid of .5" x 1.25" pieces and glued each piece onto a little .75" x 1.5" rectangle mirror.
Then I stacked the pieces inside of a wooden box with a key. I locked it up and went to visit my professor.
She had already seen me in the illustration when I’d handed it in the first time. And she certainly wasn’t slow to recognize what the mirror and all of the pieces being locked away meant. And she definitely didn’t miss the pain in my eyes holding all of that withheld sadness.
She just looked at me with compassion and asked how I was…
I told her my grandma had just died right before the project was due, and she already knew about my recent breakup.
She gave me a very sound piece of advice. She told me that if I didn’t allow myself grieve now, it would build up and come out at the worst possible moment—like in the middle of a grocery store.
She was speaking from experience.
Again, I knew she was right. And I really didn’t want to break down in a public place!!
I honestly don’t remember how I processed the sadness—but I remember doing my best to take her words to heart. Back then, I didn’t have the tools to clear emotions the way I do now, but whatever I did must have worked because I never fell apart in the grocery store. Haha.
If you have been holding onto sadness and not allowing yourself to grieve, it’s time to let it go. There’s a dose of enlightenment below to help.
Love from Jac

Since we promised to treat you to an extra dose of light in your inbox, we include a Dose of Enlightenment for you at the end of each newsletter. We value your agency, so it’s up to you whether or not you receive it!
This Dose of Enlightenment is a frequency equation meant to clear a hidden and trapped emotion that you’ve been holding onto.
If today's emotion is one that we have already cleared, know that we are addressing a different layer or situation this time.
*******************************************************
Today’s emotion is: withheld sadness
How does this emotion apply to you? For best results, ponder this question and identify how withheld sadness applies to you.
Dose of Enlightenment: 73 + 927 = E
Say it out loud with intent: “seventy-three plus nine-twenty-seven equals enlightenment.”
Breathe. Let it go. Feel the shift. Allow your body to be filled with light.
