Danny (name has been changed), was always left behind. Unintentionally, of course. His mom would arrive at the grocery store with her other kids in tow, only to find out Danny was missing.
During a family reunion, Danny was left at his grandma’s house while his family, grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins all headed to dinner.
Another time, while on a family vacation, he was left at a gas station, his family was driving away down the road... That was long before cell phones!
Thankfully, in each of these cases, he was safely reunited with his family.
I’ve always wondered if little Danny felt abandoned.
Experiences that happen during a child’s early years will often continue into adulthood. Because of this, abandonment issues can become more prevalent as you get older and it can affect your relationships.
That being said, feeling like you have been deserted doesn’t always come from childhood trauma—it can also be caused from the loss of an intimate partner, or loved one to death or divorce.
If you are feeling like you have been abandoned you may recognize one or more of these common signs:
· You are overly eager to please
· You feel insecure in the relationship
· You have trouble feeling emotionally intimate or vulnerable
· You have a strong need to take control or be controlled
· You have trouble trusting your partner’s intentions
Here are 4 tips to help you deal with and heal from abandonment issues:
1. Understand the triggers. When you learn what is causing the fear of being alone, you can take a step back, and then approach it with self-compassion and wisdom.
2. Have comfortable conversations. Talk with a loved one, family member or close friend about your fears in a calm and respectful way. Trusting and sharing may be hard at first, but it will get easier.
3. Practice self-care to make sure your emotional needs are met. Doing something you love, that brings you joy will not only benefit you, but will strengthen your relationships.
4. Give yourself an emotional release session. Doses of Enlightenment will help you identify and release the fear of abandonment and will clear those triggers so you can feel well and whole.
