She was beautiful… tall, slender, blonde and blue eyed, and probably about 10 years older than me. When I heard her introduce herself in our combined class of foot zoners, I realized that she had registered for the class I was teaching in Northern Utah.

I was excited to get to know her!

Imagine my surprise when upon meeting her, she informed me that she was hoping that I wasn’t her teacher, because she didn’t like the way I looked! Ouch! 

To her credit… she followed up and smoothed things over, and we did become friends. I was grateful for her honesty and that she was able to get past those feelings before our next class.

It seems to be far too easy to look at someone and immediately see—what we perceive to be flaws, sticking out like a sore thumb.

As humans, we make snap judgements about people’s looks, the way they dress, their weight, behavior, personality, hair color, makeup, tattoo’s, the cars they drive, political preferences, and skin color...

The list goes on and on. Sometimes we think, ‘oh, that person is dark’… or ‘she is just too happy and bubbly for my taste’. 

A few years ago, I took the counsel of President Russell M. Nelson after listening to him speak in a conference. In my prayers I asked Heavenly Father to bless me that I would be able to see his children the way he sees them. 

The answers I received to that prayer were eye opening and obvious. As I went shopping one day, I found that whenever I would look at someone, I would immediately have a thought pop into my head—a snap judgment.

It was crazy because it wasn’t a thought that was conscious on my part, and it was a bit disturbing.

I am grateful for that experience because I do not want to contribute to the crazy, mean and unjust judgment that is so prevalent in the world.

My desire is that when I see others, i am able to radiate the love of Christ to them… to see their goodness, even when they may try to bury it… and to let them know they are loved.

Let’s start a Movement to Radiate Love where we consciously and intentionally look for the best in others, give grace, and send out love instead of judgment… even hidden judgment. Say the dose of enlightenment to get started.
