Snap Judgments

Jeri: It’s so easy to make snap judgments about people because of the way we perceive them, and we forget to look for the best in them.

Jac: That’s so true. It’s way too easy to do. I think we need to regularly remind ourselves that our perceptions are not an accurate way to judge, because they are based on our own past experiences, which includes past trauma that has not been resolved. So… not good.

Years and years ago, I had a new client reach out for an appointment. She seemed to have such a strong personality and demanding demeanor during our phone conversation, that I was honestly terrified to see her.

I didn’t think I could help her, because I felt like she would be demanding things that I couldn’t promise.

I have no idea where any of those judgements were coming from, but I decided to take ownership of it as my issue, then I cleared my own emotions surrounding my fear of the appointment, and did some ho’oponopono.

When she arrived, she was not at all what I had been expecting. She was kind, fun, happy, and very open to the work. She didn’t place expectations on me or the outcome. She loved her session and received a lot of relief.

Jeri: I love how you worked on yourself so that you would be ready to help her.

We never know what someone is going through, or what they have been through in their lives that causes them to present themselves in a certain way that we view as negative. Maybe they were abused as a child or dealing with spouse abuse, maybe they are longing for attention—believing that even negative attention is better than no attention at all. There are so many different things that could be happening.

Jac: Good point!

Jeri: There have been times when I have seen a face in the crowd and I make a judgment, whether it is as simple as, wow, he is so handsome, or ugh, why did she dye her hair blue? (Just for the record… I’m not against blue hair and I’ve seen some blues that look gorgeous.)

I feel great when I think kind thoughts about others, but when my thoughts aren’t so kind, I wonder where in the heck did that thought come from, and why was I able to so easily access something unkind.

I would truly love it if I would always see the best in people and to see them through God’s eyes. He sees people as they truly are because He knows and loves them—even the strangers in a crowd. That is something I am striving for—I want to feel that kind of love for everyone.

Jac: Those are great things to strive for—especially as we are just beginning a new year!!

If any of you are struggling to see the good in others—whether it’s from making a snap judgement of a stranger at the grocery store, feeling irritation at a driver who doesn’t seem to know how to drive, or due to current (or past) difficulties in a relationship, see the dose of enlightenment below!

Happy New Year!!

Love from Jeri and Jac

Today’s emotion is: not seeing the best in others

How does this emotion apply to you? For best results, ponder this question and identify how not seeing the best in others applies to you.

Dose of Enlightenment: 87 + 913 = E

Say it out loud with intent: “eighty-seven plus nine-thirteen equals enlightenment.”

Breathe. Let it go. Feel the shift. Allow your body to be filled with light.
