That Hit to My Face Wasn’t Even the Hardest Part

Jac: When most people think of holding back emotions trapped within the jaw and temporomandibular joint, they think of anger. However, withholding sadness is also an emotion that can commonly get stuck in the jaw.

Jeri: I remember when you got hit in the face with a soccer ball when you were in high school and you developed TMJD. You couldn’t eat for months…

Jac: Oh yeah... I lived on very mashed potatoes, pudding, applesauce, and those nasty Ensure drinks Grandma recommended… Because she was so worried about me getting enough nutrients. And she was probably right—I dropped from 115 lbs to 105 pretty quickly after that injury.

Jeri: Have you ever addressed sadness as an emotion that may have contributed to that injury?

Jac: I honestly never thought to address sadness until you asked me that just now… I have definitely addressed anger.

But looking back, I realize I was sad during that time. I loved playing on the same soccer team as my sister, and only a few weeks before my jaw injury, she was taken out for the season due to a broken clavicle.

I remember being sad and angry that she had been hurt in that way—a girl illegally slide tackled her from behind because she was about to score.

I was so angry at that girl for taking such a cheap shot at my sister… and I was so sad that Jada got injured… and sad that I wouldn’t get to play soccer with her on that team ever again, because she was about to graduate from high school.

And sad that we’d lost our only real coach. Our school didn’t even officially recognize the team. Once Coach Blackburn left, we were stuck with fill-ins—or sometimes no coach at all.

I think part of me started holding it all in… and obviously, I was holding it in my jaw...

Jeri: Exactly. When emotions aren't recognized and given permission to be expressed, they are left with little choice but to find a place to hang around in the body until your body begs you to release them.

In your case, your jaw took the hit in an attempt to wake you up to the anger and sadness you had been withholding.

Jac: It's too bad I hadn't taken the time to stop and recognize that... I could have saved myself a lot of pain! (And spared myself the trouble of drinking those chalky old-people drinks—haha.)

If you're ready to acknowledge and release that sadness you didn't know you were carrying, there's a dose of enlightenment below. Your jaw will thank you!

Love from Jeri and Jac

Since we promised to treat you to an extra dose of light in your inbox, we include a Dose of Enlightenment for you at the end of each newsletter. We value your agency, so it’s up to you whether or not you receive it!

This Dose of Enlightenment is a frequency equation meant to clear a hidden and trapped emotion that you’ve been holding onto.

If today's emotion is one that we have already cleared, know that we are addressing a different layer or situation this time.

*******************************************************

Today’s emotion is: withheld sadness

How does this emotion apply to you? For best results, ponder this question and identify how withheld sadness applies to you.

Dose of Enlightenment: 73 + 927 = E

Say it out loud with intent: “seventy-three plus nine-twenty-seven equals enlightenment.”

Breathe. Let it go. Feel the shift. Allow your body to be filled with light.
