While working as a secretary at the elementary school, I was wearing my favorite bright raspberry colored jacket, complete with a big sunflower pin. It was edgy and dramatic. Totally type 3, if you are into Dressing Your Truth. It brought me so much joy, including a little piece of sunshine fun. I loved it!  

Well, I loved it until Mrs. Wheeler walked up to me and rudely asked, “What are you wearing that for?” 

“Because I love it,” I replied.

She responded, “I would never wear something like that!” She then spun around and walked away, leaving me stunned. 

I didn’t want to be affected by her judgmental opinion, but I was. I abandoned something that brought me happiness because of someone’s disapproval. I never wore it again and donated it to Deseret Industries—aka the D.I. 

If you are a highly sensitive person, making decisions based on the insensitive, or even well intentioned, comments made by others is never a good idea because it can negatively influence you to abandon your hopes, dreams, gifts, talents and even your passion and intrinsic identity.

I want you to remember this… it’s really important, so pay attention… NEVER, ever give up on you and the things that make you uniquely who you are just to please someone else. 

Being intrinsically you matters.

Your hopes and dreams matter. 

Your incredible gifts and talents matter.

Doing what you are passionate about matters.

It may not matter to Joe Schmo next door, or Mrs. Nosey down the street… but it matters to you and it matters to Heavenly Father. He knows you and He knows your divine purpose. No one else knows you better than Him. 

If you have found yourself abandoning what is most important to you, please rethink and reframe things. Spend time every day with your Father in Heaven. Talk to Him, ask Him questions about your direction in life, and write down the answers. He will bless and inspire you to know what to do. His answers are the only ones that really count.
