It was dark, except for the long, narrow strip of light coming through the broom cupboard door. My best friend, Danny and I were exploring his house and finding new places to play. We were having fun, talking and giggling in the small space.
It wasn’t long before his big brother Gary found us. I remember thinking Gary was old… he was after all, a teenager; at least 12 years older than me and Danny.
Gary held the door tightly and wouldn’t let us out. We struggled and pushed on the door, but we were no match for him.
He said he would let us out after we kissed.
We didn’t want to kiss.
Kissing was dumb.
Maybe we could just pretend, but then I noticed Gary’s eye peering at us through the thin opening between the doors.
He made it clear that our only way out was to kiss each other on the lips!
Ew!
We wanted so badly to get out of that cramped little space that after careful consideration we completed the assigned task and did the ole smackaroo.
Our 2nd and 3rd kisses happened pretty much the same way… except Gary shoved us into the closet. By the 3rd time, Danny and I were pretty much desensitized to kissing in the cupboard, we got it over with really quick, and Gary lost interest in teasing us that way.
I suspect he was outsmarted by a 3- and 4-year-old.
When you become desensitized, you are less sensitive and are less likely to feel shock or distress.
As I have pondered this subject, I believe you can become numb to God’s Truth, your health, death, moral issues, violence and numerous other matters that are so prevalent in today’s society.
If you have been dealing with things that are overly upsetting and out of your control, you may notice that extinguishing your emotional response to fear, anxiety or guilt is a way for you to cope…
This can cause you to become emotionally insensitive or callous.
The number one way to battle desensitization is by choosing to stand for something. Here are a few helpful suggestions:
• Identify what you have become desensitized to, and make a conscious decision to release your unhealthy coping mechanism to fear, anxiety and guilt.
• Decide what you believe in. Live and feel those virtues. Forgiveness, gratitude, honesty, love, civility and morality are based on your personal integrity. What do you want that to look like?
• Strive for personal improvement. Look for ways to improve upon the virtues you believe in and make strong commitments to embrace those beliefs.
• Stand for truth. Do not compromise your beliefs, even in the face of opposition. Allow yourself to feel what is true and trust the Savior to lead you.
Contemplate the above ideas, then say the dose of enlightenment below.
With love,
Jeri

Since we promised to treat you to an extra dose of light in your inbox, we include a Dose of Enlightenment for you at the end of each newsletter. We value your agency, so it’s up to you whether or not you receive it!
This Dose of Enlightenment is a frequency equation meant to clear a hidden and trapped emotion that you’ve been holding onto.
If today's emotion is one that we have already cleared, know that we are addressing a different layer or situation this time.
*******************************************************
Today’s emotions are: desensitized
How does this emotion apply to you? For best results, ponder this question and identify how desensitized applies to you.
Dose of Enlightenment: 133 + 867 = E
Say it out loud with intent: “one-thirty-three plus eight-sixty-seven equals enlightenment.”
Breathe. Let it go. Feel the shift. Allow your body to be filled with light.
