The Paradox of Tolerance

Jac: Have you ever heard of the paradox of tolerance?

Jeri: No, I have not. What is it?

Jac: It was expressed by philosopher Karl Popper. He suggests that if a society allows tolerance to the intolerant, it will eventually enable dominance of intolerance in that society.

Therefore, he believed that a truly tolerant society must have the right to deny tolerance to people who promote intolerance.

I am curious about your thoughts on that and where we are as a society today?

Jeri: Tolerance and intolerance are words that we hear constantly, and I suspect that they are being twisted on all sides. People expect you to be tolerant of their beliefs, yet in the same breath are intolerant of yours.

We are on a long and winding road that sometimes seems to be leading us to nowhere!

Turning off the news and sitting down in an attempt to get to know people with differing opinions, and having a real conversation would promote so much healing in our society.

That reminds me of a Facebook thread I recently read. A mother was concerned for her son who was attending a university. Her son was actively dating and respectful of the girls he took out.

He felt like each first date went very well. The problem was getting a second date. Multiple times, he was blocked and ghosted by the girls he had taken out.

Of course, he was concerned and felt like there must be something wrong with him. So his mom went to Facebook for answers. So many people said that had happened to their child too.

It is mind blowing that young adults can be so disconnected, uncaring, and intolerant of others. They have no idea how to communicate in a healthy way.

Jac: That is so sad. And I think it’s largely a result of social media and online/app dating—which causes the “swipe” mentality.

Your next dopamine hit from seeing your next potential match becomes more important than the actual people you are trying to “connect” with—as if those people aren’t real humans, even if you’ve already spent time with them in person.

In fact, it’s not an uncommon occurrence these days to be dating someone long enough to start building a serious relationship, only to be told how wonderful you are and how well you fit...

Then in the very next moment, they tell you that they need to end the relationship so that they can try to find someone better.

It’s so messed up.

Overall, I feel like society has become very dehumanizing to anyone who believes differently than them, as well as anyone who might require them to take responsibility for their own actions.

If you dehumanize someone, then you don’t have to feel bad for treating them poorly.

Jeri: Or take responsibility for how you make them feel, because they can’t possibly have feelings.

I think now would be a good time to clear the emotion of intolerant with the intention of sending the frequency out to the world for all who would like to receive it. We can all use a little more love, acceptance and tolerance in our lives. Say the dose of enlightenment below.

Today’s emotion is: intolerant

How does this emotion apply to you? For best results, ponder this question and identify how intolerant applies to you.

Dose of Enlightenment: 133 + 867 = E

Say it out loud with intent: “one-thirty-three plus eight-sixty-seven equals enlightenment.”

Breathe. Let it go. Feel the shift. Allow your body to be filled with light.
