Jac: On the first day of home economics my sophomore year in high school, the teacher called out the name “Jackie Taylor” during role call.
Jeri: Ew, I know you hate being called Jackie. I can’t believe she had the nerve to call you that!
Jac: I know!! I was so confused because there was no “Jackie Taylor” in my school and no teacher had ever called me that during role call before. (On the first day, teachers usually read names exactly how they appear on the role… then they ask about nicknames or what students prefer to be called…)
So I asked her, “Did you mean Jaclyn Taylor? Because that’s my name.”
She said nothing, but marked me down as present and moved on…
During role call for the next two weeks, every single day, she would call for “Jackie.”
It really grated on my nerves, but each time, I swallowed my frustration, and I politely told her my name was Jaclyn, but if she desired to call me by a nickname, she could call me Jac.
Each time following my request, she wouldn’t say a word and move on.
Jeri: That is so disrespectful.
Jac: It sure felt that way. I felt like she was picking on me for no reason—like she was trying to bother me. I’d never met her before that first day of class, so it’s not like we had ever had a run-in. And normally my teachers loved me…
Jeri: Did the situation ever change?
Jac: Not in a positive way. After those first two weeks, I’d had it! So I ignored her during role call for the entire rest of the semester. If she couldn’t respect me enough to use my real name, then I didn’t believe she deserved an answer.
Interestingly, she never marked me absent. I’d kinda been hoping she would have, so that the truth could come out to the administration of the school.
A few friends tried to correct her a few times after that, but again, it went unacknowledged.
Aside from those first two weeks of role call, I don’t remember us speaking to each other that entire semester. She would come and talk to people in my group while we were cooking, but never to me.
It was like she was playing this silent game… of… I don’t know what!
It must have made her feel powerful to pick on a student that way.
Had she at least marked me absent for ignoring her, or given me bad grades, I would have gone to the administration to complain, but… she seemed to know the perfect way to bully a certain student without getting herself into trouble!!
Jeri: Unbelievable! That is so strange for a teacher to behave that way!
If you’ve been feeling picked on by an authority figure, a parent, a sibling, a co-worker—whether it’s happening now, or if it’s from the past—see the dose of enlightenment below!

Since we promised to treat you to an extra dose of light in your inbox, we include a Dose of Enlightenment for you at the end of each newsletter. We value your agency, so it’s up to you whether or not you receive it!
This Dose of Enlightenment is a frequency equation meant to clear a hidden and trapped emotion that you’ve been holding onto.
If today's emotion is one that we have already cleared, know that we are addressing a different layer or situation this time.
*******************************************************
Today’s emotion is: feeling picked on
How does this emotion apply to you? For best results, ponder this question and identify how feeling picked on applies to you.
Dose of Enlightenment: 63 + 937 = E
Say it out loud with intent: “sixty-three plus nine-thirty-seven equals enlightenment.”
Breathe. Let it go. Feel the shift. Allow your body to be filled with light.
