Jeri: When Charlie and I were first married we lived in a new little neighborhood that was filled with other young couples and families. It was so much fun because we were all in the same boat of just starting out.
I remember hearing a story from my neighbor that shocked me. She said that sometimes when she would go shopping by herself, she would buy a new dress, or a new shirt—then she would remove the tags and place it in the back of the closet and slowly move it to the center of her wardrobe until she was ready to wear it.
Her husband would ask, “When did you get that?”
She would reply, “Oh, this old thing… I’ve had it for a long time!”
Seeing the look of shock on my face, she asked me, “Well, doesn’t everyone do that!”
Haha! It was definitely something I had never thought of!
Jac: Oh my goodness!! I wonder why she felt like she had to keep her new purchase a secret until she had them long enough to call them an old purchase…
Jeri: I got the impression that she thought her husband may not like it, but she didn’t really care—I have no idea if they actually ever had a conversation about her buying things that weren’t budgeted for. But, they probably did because he was in the banking industry.
Jac: Interesting… I can’t not think of how hurtful that could be to their relationship if he had found out what she was doing. I mean… keeping secrets and/or doing things behind someone’s back—even if they don’t seem like a big deal at the time—can create quite the breach of trust!
I think I get it though… it can take courage to communicate certain things to certain people. If we think we’ll just be told no, or that they will be mad for not asking permission, or if we are afraid to share because we’ve felt unheard in the past, or… (insert: various reasons to not want to share)… then it would be much easier to keep it to ourselves.
Jeri: I agree, keeping secrets is never a good idea—secrets have the ability to drive a big wedge between people… at some point they will be exposed. It is definitely better to openly communicate about things right from the start, even the things you may not think are a big deal.
Jac: If you are lacking honest and clear communication with important people in your life, see the dose of enlightenment below!

Today’s emotion is: lack of communication with others
How does this emotion apply to you? For best results, ponder this question and identify how lack of communication with others applies to you.
Dose of Enlightenment: 107 + 893 = E
Say it out loud with intent: “one-zero-seven plus eight-ninety-three equals enlightenment.”
Breathe. Let it go. Feel the shift. Allow your body to be filled with light.
