It was beautiful and sunny outside on my last day of first grade. It was also field day—I had been looking forward to this day, ever since they had told us about it.
I excelled in physical activities. I could outrun most of the boys—only Brad had me beat… And I competed well with the boys in all of the other events too.
I was most definitely a stereotypical “tomboy” back then.
For the last event, two teachers tautly held up a rope and each student had to jump over the rope without touching it. If we touched the rope, we were out.
Whoever cleared the rope got to be in the next round. At the beginning of each round, the teachers would raise the rope a little bit higher, and we would repeat the process.
After about 10 rounds of this game, there were only two of us left. Me and Kasey. We both kept clearing the rope and clearing the rope and clearing the rope.
Well, the teachers must have gotten tired of holding the rope, so on my next turn, they both raised the rope on me and tripped me.
So obviously, I fell and tumbled down to the ground. I was stunned and embarrassed. I remember thinking that they must have raised the rope on me… How else could I have miscalculated that jump so badly!?
The teachers couldn’t have cared less. They gathered up the rope and walked away talking and laughing—probably grateful to be done with us for the school year.
My fellow students and friends, however, quickly came to see if I was ok. They circled around me and confirmed that the teachers had, indeed, purposefully tripped me by raising the rope.
They were disturbed by that. I was disturbed by that. We walked back to the school building talking about how teachers are supposed to care about kids.
This experience has profoundly affected my life.
I always wondered why they decided they needed to interfere with a great match…
Why was I a better target than Kasey? Did they not like me? Did they believe that a girl shouldn’t beat a boy in an athletic event? Did they want to teach me a lesson? And why in the world would they think it was ok to trip someone, just so they could get out a few minutes earlier for the summer?
I’ll never know… but what I do know is that I learned to hold myself back in almost all areas of my life. Because if I held myself back, then nobody would want to trip me up.
I learned to always be good enough, but to refrain from being the best. I learned to avoid being seen. I learned to hide in the background.
I’m sure those teachers never gave that experience a second thought. I’m sure they don't have a clue about how their interfering behavior negatively impacted that little girl for many years of her life.
I’ve done a lot of healing since then, but I do still have tendencies to want to hide, and to keep myself from being seen—especially by anyone who might have reason to trip me up. So… still working on that.
This experience also taught me that interfering with other people’s lives can have a deep impact on them—in all the wrong ways.
I’m sure I’m not perfect at it, but I try to restrain myself from doing things that would create interference for others, and consequently, bring about more problems for them.
If your life has been interfered with, or if you find yourself having tendencies to want to interfere—or control outcomes of situations for others—there is a dose of enlightenment below.

Since we promised to treat you to an extra dose of light in your inbox, we include a Dose of Enlightenment for you at the end of each newsletter. We value your agency, so it’s up to you whether or not you receive it!
This Dose of Enlightenment is a frequency equation meant to clear a hidden and trapped emotion that you’ve been holding onto.
If today's emotion is one that we have already cleared, know that we are addressing a different layer or situation this time.
*******************************************************
Today’s emotion is: interfering with others
How does this emotion apply to you? For best results, ponder this question and identify how interfering with others applies to you.
Dose of Enlightenment: 157 + 843 = E
Say it out loud with intent: “one-fifty-seven plus eight-forty-three equals enlightenment.”
Breathe. Let it go. Feel the shift. Allow your body to be filled with light.
