Jeri: When my children were young my husband was very involved in service in the community. He was a volunteer firefighter, and eventually became the trainer. He was on the city and county planning and zoning commission, and served on the city council. He also coached our kids in sports.
He’s the type of guy, if you need something, he will drop everything to help—even if he is sick, he will take care of others before himself.
Jac: We definitely need people willing to serve, and I’m grateful he has been a good example of that. However, I’m curious how you perceived that affected him when he was always putting other people before himself.
Jeri: It is commendable to give service to others, and I know it brings him a lot of joy. But there is another side—it can become a problem when you put everyone else before your own health. It was hard to watch Charlie go and serve when he obviously did not feel well. In the long run, it has taken a toll on his health. There must be balance in all things—even in doing good things.
Jac: That’s so true. He had a lot of serious health scares during the years I was growing up. Why do you think some people have the tendency to put other people before themselves and their own health? I’m sure we have a lot of readers who have that tendency. I know I’ve struggled with it myself at times, but am so much better than I used to be.
Jeri: I don’t know for sure, but I wonder if it has a lot to do with wanting to please people. What are your thoughts?
Jac: I do think people pleasing could be a big reason. Making waves by pushing back, saying no, disagreeing, creating boundaries, not meeting expectations placed on us by ourselves or by others… it can all feel scary.
And naturally, we want to preserve ourselves and make life as smooth and frictionless and non-terrifying as possible. It is our nature to do whatever it takes to feel safe and to survive.
However, we often find that when we don’t take care of ourselves, our health and wellness tanks and life gets a lot harder.
Jeri: And the hardest part is that this pattern often looks like virtue. We call it being helpful, dependable, or selfless—when really, it’s slowly costing us our health.
If service has come at the expense of your health, there’s a Dose of Enlightenment below to help you clear the patterns that keep you over-giving.
Love from Jeri and Jac

Since we promised to treat you to an extra dose of light in your inbox, we include a Dose of Enlightenment for you at the end of each newsletter. We value your agency, so it’s up to you whether or not you receive it!
This Dose of Enlightenment is a frequency equation meant to clear a hidden and trapped emotion that you’ve been holding onto.
If today's emotion is one that we have already cleared, know that we are addressing a different layer or situation this time.
*******************************************************
Today’s emotion is: not taking care of self before others
How does this emotion apply to you? For best results, ponder this question and identify how not taking care of self before others applies to you.
Dose of Enlightenment: 97 + 903 = E
Say it out loud with intent: “ninety-seven plus nine-zero-three equals enlightenment.”
Breathe. Let it go. Feel the shift. Allow your body to be filled with light.
