I’m pretty sure he could see the look of resistance and terror in my eyes when he extended the call to me. It was one calling in my church that I always said I would say no to: Stake Single Adult Representative.

I have some pretty strong opinions about the Single Adult “program” (if you can even call it that) in my church and I honestly wanted nothing to do with it. Am I the only one who sees a problem with lumping all single people (from various backgrounds and situations) from ages 31 to 99+ into one group!? (Now it's 36+, but still...)

I could feel myself stewing on my thoughts as anger began bubbling up to the surface, which I promptly pushed back down…

The problem was, I couldn’t say no. I’d been praying ever since I knew that my church leader wanted to meet with me. I had prayed to know whether or not the call that would be extended was from the Lord or not. 

The look of resistance in my eyes was because this was the last thing I wanted—to serve in a program I didn’t believe in… 

The look of terror was because when he asked me to serve in that capacity, I could feel a powerful confirmation that the Lord was asking this of me. I felt compelled to humble myself and say yes.

There has been a lot of struggle serving in a calling that I don’t believe in—especially when there is such resistance to change. Yet I know that the Lord loves all of his children and that there are many in the single adult group that need opportunities to connect with others in similar situations, and we can’t wait for a perfect program to provide those opportunities.

Truly, I believe the Lord called me (and my co-rep who feels the same way I do) to help create change within our area. Miracles are happening. Change is happening. Even if it’s slower than I’d like. 

I’ve come to understand that even if I don’t believe in how things are being handled now, change comes with time and persistence. As I’ve allowed myself let go of the way I think things should be done, I find peace as I serve because I can see that it is making a difference for some people now. And if it was only for one person, it would still be worth it.

If you’re struggling with having do something you don’t fully believe in (whether it’s to a small or large degree), it’s ok to clear that energy now… and to find peace now… trusting that things can and will change in the future. See the dose of enlightenment below.
