Jac: My very first time snowboarding I made all of the other girls jealous. Not because of my skills, mind you… I was a sophomore and he was the gorgeous senior that every girl in school had a crush on. I’d never even met him before, but when he sensed my newness to the sport, he gallantly volunteered to teach me.
Jeri: Lucky girl! How did it go?
Jac: It was fun! He faced up the mountain… I faced down the mountain… and we held hands, smiled and laughed a lot, and gazed into each other's eyes all evening long up and down the mountain. But all he taught me to do was snowplow—zigzagging down the mountain—with enough repetition that those habits became very difficult to break.
Jeri: I remember you going snowboarding quite a bit. Why do you feel like snowplowing was a bad habit?
Jac: Snowplowing was a safe option, but it’s not how you snowboard… it’s how you stop and slow down.
I couldn’t carve to save my life, and when it came time to try, I discovered I was afraid of falling and kept reverting back to the snowplow method—until my sophomore year in college when I spent a whole semester in a snowboarding class learning how to break those bad habits. I had to learn to trust the way the board moved and felt while carving.
Jeri: Now I can see why becoming one with the board would deliver much more enjoyment and success. Have you been able to identify why you developed a fear of falling?
Jac: Because I didn’t have real snowboarding skills, yet I was going down a mountain and picking up speed. That can be scary. Once I learned to trust and actually snowboard properly, I didn’t have that fear anymore.
Jeri: I can’t help but wonder if not having someone to hold onto was also a part of your fear.
Jac: It could have been! But I must have genuinely overcome it, because years later (after not having been snowboarding for 13 years), I was flying down a very steep, icy hill at Targhee. I wasn’t scared at all—even after catching an edge, catching some air, and landing on the back of my head. I got right back up and went back to it.
Thankfully I was wearing a helmet, or I’m confident that I would have had a different ride down with the snow patrol on a stretcher. Instead, I just came away with a headache.
Jeri: So grateful you didn’t have to deal with a concussion from that knock on the head!
I think everyone has a fear of falling at some point—especially in icy winter conditions. I don’t want to fall. When the snow and ice come around, I always like to make sure to ground and balance myself. It helps me stay upright!
Jac: That’s a great idea. I wish I had known about that back in my snowboarding days!
The truth is, fear of falling shows up in more places than we realize. Sometimes it’s the body trying to stay safe… and sometimes it’s the heart. Whether we’re afraid of failing, losing control, getting hurt, or taking the next step—fear stops our momentum just as quickly as snowplowing did for me.
For all of you who have have a fear of falling (whether physically, emotionally, mentally or spiritually) there’s a dose of enlightenment below.
Love from Jeri and Jac

Since we promised to treat you to an extra dose of light in your inbox, we include a Dose of Enlightenment for you at the end of each newsletter. We value your agency, so it’s up to you whether or not you receive it!
This Dose of Enlightenment is a frequency equation meant to clear a hidden and trapped emotion that you’ve been holding onto.
If today's emotion is one that we have already cleared, know that we are addressing a different layer or situation this time.
*******************************************************
Today’s emotion is: fear of falling
How does this emotion apply to you? For best results, ponder this question and identify how fear of falling applies to you.
Dose of Enlightenment: 90 + 910 = E
Say it out loud with intent: “ninety plus nine-ten equals enlightenment.”
Breathe. Let it go. Feel the shift. Allow your body to be filled with light.
